Blood Pressure Categories

Category Systolic (mmHg) Diastolic (mmHg) What It Means
Normal
Less than 120 Less than 80 Healthy. Maintain with regular exercise and a balanced diet.
Elevated
120–129 Less than 80 Watch closely. Lifestyle changes recommended. No medication yet.
High Blood Pressure
Stage 1
130–139 80–89 Medication may be needed. Discuss lifestyle changes with your doctor.
High Blood Pressure
Stage 2
140 or higher 90 or higher Medication typically required. Lifestyle changes essential. See your doctor.
Hypertensive Crisis
Higher than 180 Higher than 120 Seek care right away. Get medical help immediately. Call 911 if needed.
